Many researchers conclude that the Body Mass Index or BMI is too simple, and needs a multifaceted approach to measure overall health and fitness.
Several doctors, including Eric Braverman, M.D., president of the Path Foundation - a nonprofit organization in New York City dedicated to brain research - says there is a discrepancy between BMI and body fat, and that BMI standards should be reexamined.
?Many times a bodybuilder will be classified as obese, whereas a woman who looks good but may have a lot of body fat will have a normal BMI,? Braverman explains.
In a study conducted by Braverman and his colleagues involving over 1,400 men and women, 39 percent of the participants that were labeled overweight by their BMI were actually obese according to the American Society of Bariatric Physicians standard.
Braverman advises that the BMI should take into consideration the blood level of leptin - a hormone that regulates energy and appetite - because it better reflects a person?s body fat percentage.
Keeping an eye on your BMI is still a useful tool to measure your health, however don?t limit yourself to just one test. There are several tests to measure the full scope of your health and fitness, so consult with your doctor to learn more.
