Congress Should Allow Small Businesses to ... - 21st Century Retail

In order to help the small businesses, the backbone of our national economy, and improve local economies all over the country, we desperately need to level the playing field for brick-and-mortar retailers.? We are currently competing against online-only retailers at a nearly 10% disadvantage due to an unfair loophole in the current sales tax system.? We must not only collect, but account for and remit sales tax ? regardless of our size ? while online retailers do not?even though purchasers (from them as well as from us) owe the tax.

Internet retailers claim they have no physical presence (or ?nexus? under the law) in most states and therefore do not use services and should not have to collect sales tax.? But many have warehouses and distribution centers all over the country and make sales based on so-called affiliate relationships in every state every single day.? In my view, that?s a sufficient connection to the state!? They absolutely need to be made to compete on a level playing field.? Otherwise, brick-and-mortar retailers will not survive.? People take small businesses for granted, but no business can survive at a 10% disadvantage over time.? And should we not survive, the economy of the individual states and the country as a whole will suffer.

Brick-and-mortar businesses not only collect sales tax, they hire workers, pay their wages, pay payroll taxes, property taxes, and a myriad of other taxes.? As importantly, they engage in and support their communities in many ways: contributing to and participating in school, church and library events, volunteering to help neighbors in need, serving on boards and supporting everything from parks to public service programs.? As the long-time owner of a bookstore, I can testify that my business is an active participant in our community, working with schools, libraries and civic groups, helping teachers with their curricula, donating books and serving on boards in the arts and business communities, at schools and universities as well as the churches that we and our children attend.? We are a vital part of the communities in which live and work.

We may only employ 25 people (for whom we also provide health insurance) at the King?s English Bookshop, but we anchor a previously run-down neighborhood which, over the 35 years since we opened our doors, has added business after successful business.? Our neighborhood is now known throughout our city as a wonderful and walkable area. ?Real estate prices are not only high but stable, even in the midst of the recession?we are a boon to the local economy.? And we are not alone. ?Areas such as ours all across the state and around the country make for a vibrant economy and heart and soul of communities.

We aren?t asking for special favors; we are by our very nature fiercely competitive and we do just fine in a fair retail environment. ?And that?s all we?re asking for?fairness. ?There is no conceivable reason why our government should offer an unfair advantage to one segment of retail over another?especially a segment that gives little or nothing back to our economy or our communities.

Please, let the free market work the way it was meant to?on a level playing field.

Betsy Burton is a small business owner.? She runs? The King?s English Bookshop?in Salt Lake City and is the Co-Chair of Local First Utah.? Betsy is also a member of the?Alliance for Main Street Fairness.

What You Need To Know About Vision Insurance

Sometimes, in the world of insurance, terms are thrown around to confuse you so that you spend more money. After all, insurance is basically just a safety net for anything that may go wrong, right? Well, since vision insurance is such an important thing to have, its important you know what youre talking about before getting yourself too deep. Enjoy this helpful guide to truly understanding all about vision insurance!

It's often the terms used in a specific field that we don't understand. While there are many phrases within the world of insurance that might seem familiar to you - like HMO, carrier, dependents, copay, deductible - there may be just as many that you dont understand. Unfortunately for us, the consumers, only bad things can come when we dont understand what were purchasing! If it all sounds like a different language to you, its ok; were here to help!

HMO (or "Health Maintenance Organization") is a group of insurance plans that allow people (and their employers) to pay a set fee for all services.

Carrier refers to the actual insurance company or HMO that you are buying your health plan from. Your dependents are usually children and/or spouses.

Copay refers to amount of money that you would need to pay just to retain vision-care services.

Your deductible is the amount of money you need to cover before your vision care will kick in and pay the rest.

Capitated basically just means "pre-paid". (So when referring to your HMO: they offer monthly capitated fees that will remain the same).

HIPAA (or "the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act" of 1996) is a federal law serving several matters for the consumers protection, one of which guards your medical records and personal details from any kind of publicity.

HSA is a "health savings account". This allows you to set money aside for any of your health or vision-care needs - it is particularly important to note that the funds will be taken from pre-taxed income.

Outpatient services is when you have some sort of surgery or vision-care medical service that doesnt require staying overnight in the hospital. This is an important term because it is not uncommon that insurance companies will refuse to cover the costs not pertaining to outpatient services.

Your premium is your annual fee that is paid in order to continue with your insurance plan.

A primary care provider is your main optometrist or ophthalmologist taking care of all of your eye care needs, including tests, procedures, etc.

PPO (or "preferred provider organization") is a network of several different types of medical service providers that are organized by insurance companies that offer discounted rates.

If you currently have vision insurance and are looking for the best place to buy glasses, it might behoove you to take a look at your PPO. If you dont have a PPO, or if youre not loving the choices that they offer, you can certainly check out prescription eyeglasses online - which are often much cheaper anyway! Good luck with your insurance company; at least now you can speak their language!

(AP) ? Wildfires moved in on some of Colorado's most popular summer tourist destinations over the weekend, destroying nearly two dozen homes near Rocky Mountain National Park and emptying hotels and campgrounds at the base of Pikes Peak.

A wildfire near Colorado Springs erupted Saturday and grew out of control to more than 3 square miles early Sunday, prompting the evacuation of more than 11,000 residents and an unknown number of tourists. On Saturday, a blaze destroyed structures near the mountain community of Estes Park, where many visitors stay while visiting the park. The Larimer County Sheriff's Office said Sunday that 22 homes and 2 outbuildings had been burned.

The two fires are among eight burning in Colorado a week before the Fourth of July, a key time for family vacations to national parks and other destinations. A statewide ban on open campfires and private fireworks has been in place for more than a week.

With Colorado midway through its worst wildfire season in a decade, travelers have seen some of their favorite sites closed to the public, obscured by smoke and haze.

"We're used to flooding and tornadoes, nothing like this," said Amanda Rice of Rock Falls, Ill., who evacuated a Manitou Springs hotel late Saturday with her husband, four children and dog. Some travelers were awoken with evacuation orders. Rice, scared when she saw flames, took her family to the evacuation center before she was told to go.

"It was just this god-awful orange glow. It was surreal. It honestly looked like hell was opening up," Rice said Sunday.

Plumes of gray and white smoke poured from the mountains Sunday, obscuring at times Pikes Peak, the most-summited high-elevation mountain in the nation and inspiration for the song "America The Beautiful." Winds were pushing smoke away from Colorado Springs, but residents and tourists watched nervously as haze wrapped around the peak.

Families planning whitewater rafting trips or visits to the stunning red-rock formations in Garden of the Gods park in Colorado Springs were instead spending their vacations passing out bottled water and setting up cots in evacuee centers.

They included Mark Stein of Morristown, N.J., whose family arrived after midnight Sunday at their Manitou Springs hotel for a week of whitewater rafting and sightseeing.

"We were sleeping for 15 minutes when they started knocking on the door ? a day from hell," Stein said of the day of travel. With his wife and two sons, Stein spent the first night of his vacation setting up cots for more than 200 evacuees who slept at the school.

"I think it's the best vacation ever. This is what the real world is about. There's a lot of people that need help," Stein said.

Also Sunday, a brushfire that began near Elbert, about 50 miles southwest of Denver, quickly spread to about 60 acres, forcing the evacuation of about 100 residents.

Half the nation's firefighting fleet is now battling fires in Colorado, said Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper. He said C-130 military transport planes from Peterson Air Force Base in Colorado Springs would begin assisting on Monday.

With eight wildfires burning, including a fire that has scorched more than 118 square miles and destroyed at least 191 homes near Fort Collins, Colorado is having its worst wildfire season in a decade.

"People recognize this is going to take a big push" to extinguish, Hickenlooper said Sunday from a Colorado Springs grocery store, where volunteers were passing out burritos, sandwiches and drinks to 350 firefighters working near Pikes Peak.

The wildfire near Rocky Mountain National Park destroyed vacation cabins and closed the most commonly used entrance to the park. Clouds of smoke blew toward the 102-year-old Stanley Hotel that inspired Stephen King to write "The Shining."

Carolyn Baty and her husband, Darrell, vacationing from Fort Worth, Texas, were evacuated from their cabin Saturday afternoon.

"I smelled smoke coming from both directions, and then I heard the knock on the door," Darrell Baty told The Denver Post.

A fire burning near Fort Collins has scorched more than 118 square miles, destroying at least 191 homes. Though some evacuees were allowed home Sunday, that blaze has become among the largest and most expensive in Colorado history.

Elsewhere in the West, firefighters made progress against wildfires in Utah, New Mexico, Arizona and California.

? In Utah, a 15-square-mile blaze around Fountain Green in Sanpete County was threatening more than 359 permanent structures and 213 mobile homes and travel trailers in four rural subdivisions, forcing about 1,000 people to flee. BLM says the human-caused fire erupted Saturday afternoon. Officials report progress on a 9-square-mile wildfire around Saratoga Springs, about 40 miles south of Salt Lake City.

? In California, a wildfire about 60 miles north of Los Angeles triggered evacuations of campgrounds around an off-road recreation area on Saturday. Officials said the fire has blackened at least 1,000 acres in the Hungry Valley State Vehicular Recreation Area, along the Interstate 5 corridor in Gorman.

? In New Mexico, a lightning-caused wildfire that destroyed 242 homes and businesses is 90 percent contained. The 69-square-mile fire near Ruidoso began June 4. Meanwhile, the largest wildfire in state history was 87 percent contained, having burned more than 464 square miles after two blazes merged on May 16.

? In Arizona, the U.S. Forest Service said Sunday that containment against the Pecos Fire, just outside of Young, is up to 50 percent and remains under 12,000 acres. Officials say many of the firefighting resources are being released to their home units or to other fire assignments.

Ex-Penn St. assistant Sandusky convicted of abuse

BELLEFONTE, Pa. (AP) ? For years, the children Jerry Sandusky had preyed upon kept quiet about what the former Penn State assistant football coach did to them in echoing shower stalls, empty hotel rooms and the muffled confines of his basement bedroom.

Late Friday, after a swift trial and less than two days of deliberations, a jury issued an emphatic verdict: Sandusky was guilty on 45 counts of sexual abuse, meaning the man once considered a successor to coach Joe Paterno will likely die in prison.

The verdict is not the end of the scandal that took down beloved football coach Joe Paterno and deeply shook the state's most prominent university. It will play out for years in courtrooms and through a set of ongoing investigations.

But the trial did present one piece of finality: Sandusky was taken away in handcuffs to the county jail. Sentencing will be in about three months, but mandatory minimums will keep him behind bars for life.

"One of the recurring themes in this case was, 'Who would believe a kid?'" said Attorney General Linda Kelly. "The answer is, we in Bellefonte, Pa., would believe a kid."

Sandusky, a retired defensive coach who was once Paterno's heir apparent, showed little emotion as the verdict was read, giving his wife, Dottie, and family members a half-wave as the county sheriff led him away.

There were only three acquittals among the charges related to 10 victims, eight of whom took the stand to describe fondling, forced oral sex and anal rape. Many of the accusers testified that they had told no one of the abuse that dated as far back as the mid-1990s ? not parents, not girlfriends and not police.

The accuser known in court papers as Victim 6, whose mother alerted authorities in 1998 after Sandusky took her son into a shower, broke down in tears upon hearing the verdicts in the courtroom. Afterward, a prosecutor embraced him and said, "Did I ever lie to you?"

The man, now 25, testified that Sandusky called himself the "tickle monster" in a shower assault. He declined to comment to a reporter afterward. His mother said: "Nobody wins. We've all lost."

One of the three counts for which Sandusky was acquitted concerned Victim 6, an indecent assault charge. The man testified that Sandusky had given him a bear hug in the shower but at one point he just "blacked out."

The other acquittals were an indecent assault charge related to Victim 5, who said Sandusky fondled him in the shower, and an involuntary deviate sexual intercourse charge regarding Victim 2, the boy graduate assistant Mike McQueary saw being attacked in a campus shower.

Almost immediately after the judge adjourned, loud cheers could be heard from a couple hundred people gathered outside the courthouse as word quickly spread that Sandusky had been convicted. The crowd included victim advocates and local residents with their kids. Many held up their smartphones to take pictures as people filtered out of the building.

As Sandusky was placed in the cruiser to be taken to jail, someone yelled at him to "Rot in hell!" Others hurled insults and he shook his head no in response.

Defense attorney Joe Amendola was interrupted by cheers from the crowd on the courthouse steps when he said, "The sentence that Jerry will receive will be a life sentence."

In addition to the eight who testified, there were two yet-unidentified victims for which prosecutors relied on testimony from a university janitor and McQueary, whose account of a sexual encounter between Sandusky and a boy of about 10 years old ultimately led to the Paterno's dismissal and the university president's ouster.

Sandusky did not take the stand in his own defense.

After the verdict was announced, defense attorney Karl Rominger said it was "a tough case" with a lot of charges and that an appeal was certain. He said the defense team "didn't exactly have a lot of time to prepare."

The ex-coach had repeatedly denied the allegations, and his defense suggested that his accusers had a financial motive to make up stories, years after the fact. His attorneys also painted Sandusky as the victim of overzealous police investigators who coached the alleged victims into giving accusatory statements.

One accuser testified that Sandusky molested him in the locker-room showers and in hotels while trying to ensure his silence with gifts and trips to bowl games. He also said Sandusky had sent him "creepy love letters."

Another spoke of forced oral sex and instances of rape in the basement of Sandusky's home, including abuse that left him bleeding. He said he once tried to scream for help, knowing that Sandusky's wife was upstairs, but figured the basement must be soundproof.

Another, a foster child, said Sandusky warned that he would never see his family again if he ever told anyone what happened.

And just hours after the case went to jurors, lawyers for one of Sandusky's six children, Matt, said he had told authorities that his father abused him.

Matt Sandusky had been prepared to testify on behalf of prosecutors, his lawyers said in a statement. The lawyers said they arranged for Matt Sandusky to meet with law enforcement officials but did not explain why he didn't testify.

"This has been an extremely painful experience for Matt and he has asked us to convey his request that the media respect his privacy," the statement said. It didn't go into details about his allegations.

Defense witnesses, including Dottie Sandusky, described Sandusky's philanthropic work with children over the years, and many spoke in positive terms about his reputation in the community. Prosecutors had portrayed those efforts as an effective means by which Sandusky could camouflage his molestation as he targeted boys who were the same age as participants in The Second Mile, a charity he founded in the 1970s for at-risk youth.

Sandusky's arrest in November led the Penn State trustees to fire Paterno as head coach, saying he exhibited a lack of leadership after fielding a report from McQueary. The scandal also led to the ouster of university President Graham Spanier and criminal charges against two university administrators for failing to properly report suspected child abuse and perjury.

The two administrators, athletic director Tim Curley and now-retired vice president Gary Schultz, are fighting the allegations and await trial.

The family of Paterno, who died exactly five months before Sandusky's conviction, released a statement saying: "Although we understand the task of healing is just beginning, today's verdict is an important milestone. The community owes a measure of gratitude to the jurors for their diligent service. Our thoughts and prayers continue to be with the victims and their families."

In a statement, Penn State praised the accusers who testified and said that it planned to invite the victims of Sandusky's abuse to participate in a private program to address their concerns and compensate them for claims related to the school.

Sandusky had initially faced 52 counts of sex abuse. Prosecutors dropped one count and the judge tossed three others during the trial, on grounds two were unproven, one was brought under a statute that didn't apply and another was duplicative.

Adam Levine, Jessica Lange 'American Horror Story' Details Revealed

In 'AHS' season two, Lange is 'a bride of Christ,' writer tells MTV News.
By Jocelyn Vena, with reporting by Tami Katzoff

While there have been scant details regarding the second season of "American Horror Story" floating around since it was announced it would be rebooted in a new time and place with spanking-new characters, what fans have been most clamoring to know about is how season one bad girl Jessica Lange will be re-imagined for the series.

"She's not playing this kind of ersatz Tennessee Williams character this time," "AHS" writer Tim Minear told MTV News about Lange in season two. "She's playing something that's a little more East Coast, a little more patrician."

While she was a bit of a darkly motivated, self-involved floozy in season one, her new backstory seems to paint a different picture for the character. "She's playing a nun," he said. "She's playing an administrator of a facility. It's different. In this instance, she's a bride of Christ."

Season one of the FX horror series took place in sunny Los Angeles, which served as the backdrop to Murder House and its disturbed inhabitants, both living and dead. But, season two will take place in the 1960s on the East Coast with a mental institution as the locale for all the creepiness. Lange will call the shots, which is sort of what she did in season one as well, but it seems she'll be motivated in a whole new set of ways.

"We thought it would be cool. I mean, the truth is, when I first met with [creators] Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk about the show, I came in, I read the pilot script, and I'm like, 'OK guys, this is all very well and good — I don't know how you make this into a TV show. I don't know how you sustain this,' " Minear recalled.

"And Ryan immediately had the answer, and that was, 'Oh, the way we sustain it is by the end of the season, we have killed off every character.' And I'm like, 'I'm in!' And then you revamp it. Basically, in season two, you have a whole new story, a whole new location, a whole new time frame. You just do something different," he added. "The reason we're doing it in the 1960s is because that fits the story that we want to tell."

Given that anything is possible in the "AHS" world, there's a chance that the infamous Murder House just might make a cameo. "I wouldn't rule anything out," Minear shared.

Sure, everyone has been salivating over details about Lange and her newly learned good-girl character, but there's another casting that has everyone intrigued: Maroon 5 leading man Adam Levine has been cast as one of "The Lovers." "Let's say that Adam's character is kind of a nod to contemporary sensibilities, as opposed to something from the mid-century," Minear noted.

Levine joins other returning castmembers Zachary Quinto, Sarah Paulson, Evan Peters and Lily Rabe as well as Lange.

Levine and his bandmates will drop Overexposed on Tuesday. They will sit down with MTV News for an "MTV First" on Monday to discuss the new album, and perhaps Levine will share more details about his "AHS" role.

Don't miss the premiere of Maroon 5's "One More Night" video during "MTV First: Maroon 5" on Monday, June 25, at 7:53 p.m. on MTV, followed by a 30-minute Q&A with the band on MTV.com.

Samson Carbon 49 USB MIDI Controller

MIDI controllers for the iPad are springing up all over the place. Samson has entered the fray with the Carbon 49 ($89 list), a stylish controller keyboard that doubles as an iPad dock. Well, sort of. The Samson Carbon 49 isn't quite what it seems at first glance?the "dock," such as it is, is merely a place to rest the iPad, as there's no actual dock connector of any kind. But the Carbon 49 is still worth a look, particularly for any musician that needs a USB-powered controller for a desktop machine as well as an iPad.

Design, Controls, and Setup
The pearl-white metallic Carbon 49 looks sharp. It's made entirely of plastic, but that's the norm for low-cost, portable MIDI controllers these days. Samson bundles the Carbon 49 with a three-foot USB cable, an instruction manual, and a DVD that includes a copy of Native Instruments' Komplete Elements, which includes more than 3GB of samples, effects, three instrument players, 1,000 sounds, and other tools for PC-based composition (not with the iPad).

To the left of the keybed are a pair of plastic wheels. The pitch wheel features a center detent and is spring-loaded, as is typical for pitch controls; release the wheel and it returns to the center. The modulation wheel, on the other hand, stops wherever you leave it. Above the two wheels, there are Up and Down buttons for both Octave and Transpose (the latter meaning one half-step at a time, in this case). The three-digit red LED readout on the top changes to show controller messages, half-step detents, or octave detents, depending on what you're doing. To the right of the LED readout is a horizontal volume slider, a data wheel that clicks as you turn it, and an Edit button.

Across the top of the left half of the keybed are labels indicating various modes and controls you can access with the Edit button, such as altering the keyboard's velocity response curve, sending Notes Off commands, and changing the function of the various keyboard controls. There are no hardware transport controls. And with just one knob and one slider, you won't be doing much real-time parameter adjusting, at least when using the Carbon 49 as a controller on a PC or Mac. With the iPad it's a different story, since it's always docked and right there in front of you.

For this review, I tested with an Apple iPad 2. Unfortunately, since the Carbon 49 isn't actually an iPad dock, you'll still need to purchase the Apple Camera Connection Kit ($29) in order to connect an iPad. That said, once you do it, it works fine, and you don't need to install a driver on the iPad. You do need to tell each application that an external MIDI controller is connected, though; the procedure varies by app.

Samson Carbon 49

Testing, a Few Quirks, and Conclusions
I fired up a number of apps on the iPad 2, including Apple GarageBand 1.2 ($4.99, 4 stars) and Moog Music Animoog ($29.99, 4 stars). The Carbon 49's response time is excellent. I couldn't detect any perceptible lag between when I pressed the keys and when I heard music on the iPad. I also tested the Carbon 49 on a Mac Pro when recording with Avid Pro Tools 10 ($699, 4.5 stars); it also functioned perfectly in that role as well. The Carbon 490's key bed itself feels good to play. Samson has struck a reasonable balance between springiness, feel, and key release. It's no weighted keyboard, but the semi-weighted keys offer just the right level of responsiveness.

Samson includes a pair of rubberized bumpers you can use to fit the thinner, rounded-edge iPad 2 or the New iPad into the dock more securely, although you don't necessarily need them. I found the bumpers to be more of an annoyance. The way Samson shows the Carbon 49 and docked iPad in the photo is with the dock port to the left, so that the USB cable can be as short as possible. It turns out in practice that setup is basically impossible: Dock the iPad in this manner with the bumpers installed, and you'll trigger the Power switch on the bottom right edge of the iPad, which turns off the screen, turns it back on, asks you if you want to power off the unit entirely, and so on until you give up in frustration. Docking the iPad this way also presses the Volume buttons on the bottom edge, making them impossible to adjust.

Solution: Just flip it the other way and extend the USB cable further and you'll be fine, although it's a bit messier. It looks like the slot will block the headphone jack, but it just makes it with about a quarter of an inch to spare?assuming you leave the bumpers out. One other minor quirk: The Carbon 49 shows a white cable in the photo, but my test unit came with a black one. Given that the Camera Connection Kit is white, and the keyboard is also white, it looks like an afterthought.

Otherwise, the Samson Carbon 49 is a good value and a fine choice if you need a USB-powered MIDI controller that doubles as an iPad dock for playing keyboard sounds in apps. It's unfortunate that you still have to buy the Camera Connection Kit, though. If you've already got a MIDI controller, and it has an AC power adapter, check out the IK Multimedia iRig MIDI ($69.99, 3.5 stars). It's equally responsive and works just as well otherwise, although you'll still need a way to prop up the iPad. There's also the Korg MicroKey, which comes in 25-, 49-, and 61-key versions, and has a built-in, two-port USB hub.

Moving up the line in price, the Griffin StudioConnect ($149.99, 3 stars) offers a built-in MIDI interface, and props up and charges your iPad, though you'll have to provide your own existing MIDI controller. Finally, the Alesis iO Dock ($399, 4 stars) costs considerably more, but it's like a super StudioConnect; it's still the best iPad recording interface out there, although it's far from perfect, and lacks the Carbon 49's MIDI keyboard. In the meantime, the Carbon 49 does exactly what it's supposed to do?and at just $89, it's a little less expensive than competing controllers that lack an iPad dock.

The Zipper Truck Lifts Thousands of 1,500-Pound Blocks in Minutes [Monster Machines]

For years, San Francisco's iconic Golden Gate Bridge was a deathtrap. Cars would zip past one another at 65 MPH, separated by a thin line of yellow traffic cones, and head-on collisions were routine. However, a new barrier system—laid by a massive vehicle known as a Zipper Truck—will keep passing drivers from landing in each other's laps. More »

The Right Way To Land Engineering Roles | Self Improvement Blogs ...

There are many engineering jobs out there just waiting for folks to take on them, but the fact is that many people are really looking for them in all the wrong places. Indeed, some people will be in a position to find jobs if they?re going to read the newspaper?s special jobs sections, yet in general they?re hard to land, as there is always someone that was quicker and called first.

When it comes to the salary, those working as engineers will not have to stress about not having the ability to pay for their bills at the month?s end. The salary is great and they will be able to afford going in vacations even every month if they opt to.

A big number of roles internet sites can be found by just doing a simple Google search and considering them, folk will easily be able to find the position of their dreams. For example they can just go to www.jobsearch.com.au and skim the job categories there.

New roles are uploaded on a regular basis and this suggests that in the final analysis, people who wishes to get employed will ultimately manage to find an employer. An important step of the procedure of applying is sending a curriculum vitae that is very well written, structured and presented in the requested format by the employer. Not all bosses will need the standard format, so if this rule is not followed, with no regard for how well the CV is written it is going to be denied.

One of the greatest news is simply that corporations will provide fast feedback to candidates, so there?s no need to wait for days on end for an answer that may allegedly never come. With that said, those trying to find engineering jobs will actually need to think about the web as the ultimate solution of landing a job in their selected field!

Mark Read is the Managing Director of www.jobsearch.com.au, One of Australia?s top 5 job assembly websites in Australia. With several thousand roles available in all zones of the Labor Market locally or nationally. Check out thousands of roles and look for your new career today.

Rihanna To Sit Down With Oprah On 'Next Chapter'

Singer will appear on the show in August, Winfrey announces on Twitter.

Oprah Winfrey is following up her sit-down with the Kardashians and 50 Cent with another pop-culture superstar interview. The talk show maven took to her Twitter on Monday (June 18) to confirm that Rihanna would appear on an upcoming episode of her OWN talk show, "Oprah's Next Chapter."

Oprah didn't have an exact date for the interview, but did note that it would all go down in August. A rep for OWN hadn't responded to MTV News' request for further information at press time.

Rihanna appeared on Winfrey's talk show back in January 2010, where she performed Bob Marley's classic "Redemption Song" to benefit the victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Oprah also dedicated an entire episode of her talk show to the issue of domestic violence one year before in March 2009. The episode was in part inspired by the 2009 assault of Rihanna by then-boyfriend Chris Brown.

While Ri didn't appear on the episode, Winfrey did have a message for young women who find themselves in abusive relationships. "If you go back with a man who hits you, it's because you don't think you're worthy of being with a man who won't," Winfrey said during the episode. "I've said before, 'Love doesn't hurt, and if a man hits you once, he will hit you again.' "

Given all the headlines that Rihanna has found herself in recently, including reconnecting with Brown on several tracks earlier this year and having her name tossed around as one of the reasons why Drake and Breezy got into a fight last week in New York City, the singer and the talk-show host should have some interesting talking points.

In addition to her newly announced interview with Winfrey, Rihanna also made headlines on Monday thanks to her brand-new tattoo. Over the weekend, she tweeted out a photo of her new ankle tattoo. The tat is that of a falcon shaped somewhat like a handgun. "Falcon: a light that shines in the darkness! Never close their eyes during sleep," she tweeted on Saturday. It joins her many, many tattoos, several of which are actually gun images.

What questions do you hope Oprah asks Rihanna? Leave your comment below!

Kent St. eliminates top-seeded Florida from CWS

David Lyon (right) and Kent State totaled 12 hits against four Florida pitchers Monday.

Bruce Thorson-US PRESSWIRE

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- The curse of the No. 1 seed continued at the College World Series. Florida is out after a 5-4 loss to Kent State in a game in which the Gators couldn't seem to catch a break.

Starting pitcher Hudson Randall left after the first inning because of heat-related symptoms. The defense, which committed three errors in a loss to South Carolina on Saturday, was charged with two more against the Flashes.

And when it looked like the Gators might capitalize on CWS newcomer Kent State's shaky relief pitching in the ninth, they couldn't get the call they needed from the umpire.

"It's an unfortunate way to end the season, but I think Kent State deserves a lot of credit for the way they played today,'' Florida coach Kevin O'Sullivan said. "They hung in there, got a big strikeout at the end, and our guys hung in there right to the last out.''

Florida (47-20), which lost to South Carolina in last year's finals, came to Omaha as the favorite. But the Gators went 0-2 and became the 13th straight No. 1 seed to leave without the championship.

The Gators gave up four unearned runs and another on a wild pitch while falling behind 5-1. They loaded the bases with one out in the ninth against Kent State relievers Michael Clark and Josh Pierce.

Pierce fought back from a 3-0 count to strike out Casey Turgeon when Turgeon couldn't check his swing and got called out on an appeal to the third-base umpire. Justin Shafer flew out to right to end the game.

"I've been able to make it out here three times and all three times I've been just as disappointed,'' said catcher Mike Zunino, the Dick Howser Trophy winner as the national player of the year. "You put in so much hard work and get so close to the guys. It's one of those things where you don't want it to end. It's going to take a while to hit me.''

The Gators came to Omaha seventh in the nation in fielding then made five errors.

George Roberts drove in runs each of the first two innings for Kent State after shortstop Nolan Fontana and third baseman Josh Tobias committed errors.

Florida scored in the sixth and added two more runs in the seventh to make it 5-4.

Three outs away from a pulling the upset, Clark walked Preston Tucker on four straight pitches to start the ninth. He was 2-0 against Zunino when Kent State coach Scott Stricklin called on Pierce, who also struggled with his control and put Zunino on.

After pinch hitter Cody Dent moved over the runners with a sacrifice, Pierce hit Daniel Pigott in the shoulder to load the bases.

Pierce fell behind 3-0 to Turgeon before throwing a strike. It looked like Turgeon would walk - TV replays indicated strike two was outside - but he couldn't hold back on his check swing on the next pitch and third base umpire Jeff Henrichs called him out.

Shafer put a good swing on Pierce's next pitch, but Sutton was able to chase down the fly to end the game.

Ryan Bores (10-3) got the win for Kent State (47-19) and Pierce earned his third save.

It was 95 degrees at the start of the game, making it the warmest first pitch at the CWS since June 11, 2001. Before Monday, Kent State hadn't played a game in weather warmer than 82 degrees all season.

It was Florida's Hudson who was bothered by the heat and humidity. At one point in the first inning, Gators coach Kevin O'Sullivan made a mound visit and athletic trainers brought water to Hudson.

Hudson finished the inning with one unearned run scored against him. O'Sullivan wouldn't let him come out for the second because it was apparent he was ill.

"He looked fine before the game,'' O'Sullivan said. "I could tell he was laboring a little bit. I went out to give him a little breather to catch his breath. I asked him in the dugout if he was OK to go back out - be brutally honest with me. He looked me in the eye, and I could tell he wasn't ready to go back out.''

Arkansas 2, South Carolina 1

OMAHA, Neb. (AP) -- Ryne Stanek and Barrett Astin combined on a four-hitter and Arkansas beat South Carolina 2-1 at the College World Series on Monday night, ending the Gamecocks' NCAA tournament record winning streak at 22 games.

The Gamecocks (46-18) will have to beat Kent State on Wednesday to keep alive their hopes of winning a third straight national title.

The Razorbacks (46-20) earned two days off and need one more win to go to the best-of-three finals.

Matt Vinson's RBI single in the fourth inning gave Arkansas a 2-0 lead. Evan Marzilli's two-out triple pulled the Gamecocks within a run in the fifth, but they got just one hit the rest of the way.

Stanek (8-4) allowed three hits and turned the game over in the seventh inning to Astin, who earned his 11th save.

Colby Holmes (7-2) allowed two runs on four hits in 3 2-3 innings.
