Android 4.3 Jelly Bean Logo

Sony Mobile would be one of the first companies to announce the upcoming Android updates for their devices. It started rolling out the Android 4.2.2 update for the Xperia Z and the Xperia ZL starting last month. Now it has confirmed that the Xperia ZR and the Xperia Tablet Z would start receiving Android 4.2 from early August. It has also confirmed the list of devices that would get the Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update.

List of Xperia devices that would get Android 4.3 (Jelly Bean) update

  • Xperia Z
  • Xperia ZL
  • Xperia ZR
  • Xperia Tablet Z
  • Xperia SP
  • Xperia Z Ultra

Another good news is that they are planning to update the select (2012) Xperia devices running 4.1 directly to 4.3, skipping the Android 4.2. The company said that they would reveal more details about the list of devices soon. Sony started rolling out the Android 4.1 update for the 2012 Xperia devices starting from February earlier this year.

It has also detailed the Android 4.3 process and promised faster upgrade times. It says that the software upgrade process has two phases, the first one is the Bring up phase and the Test, and second being the certification and approval phase. Sony delayed?the ICS roll out, and accepts that it took time for,?certification and approval phase that is the most time consuming process. They say that they have?improved upgrade process in place that would let them deliver the updates faster.

Sony did not reveal the exact time-frame for the roll out for these devices, hope they would provide more details soon. The roll out might vary across different carriers and countries.

Forbes: Pomona College No. 2 in nation

Pomona College was named the second best college in the nation. (Photo courtesy of Philip Channing)

CLAREMONT -- The Inland Empire is home to the nation's second best college, according to a new list published Wednesday.

The 126-year-old Pomona College was named the second best college in the nation, behind Stanford, according to Forbes' America's Top Colleges 2013 list.

It's the first time in the list's six-year history that California schools have take the top two spots. (It's also the first time that Ivy League schools haven't taken the top two spots.) The magazine also ranked UC Berkeley, as the top state school in the nation, at No. 22.

"In one sense, certainly, it's a big surprise, because you never expect something like this," Pomona College President David W. Oxtoby said Wednesday, "but we really think we're number one, of course."

The Top Colleges list, compiled by Forbes and the Center for College Affordability and Productivity, weighs what graduates can expect upon graduation more heavily than how competitive a college is to get into, according to the magazine article announcing the ranking.

"We are certainly graduating students that are doing amazing things," Oxtoby said.

The 1,586-student college only admits about 13 percent of its applicants, so officials already have no trouble filling available spots.

"But on the other hand, you want people to be aware of you, so that the right students are aware of us and applying," Oxtoby said.

British Prime Minister calls for Internet blacklist

In an effort to combat illegal Web traffic, Prime Minister David Cameron announced a plan to blacklist certain Internet sites, and create "family friendly" Wi-Fi networks.

By Katherine Jacobsen,?Contributor / July 22, 2013

A ?family friendly? home network filter will become part of a default setting for the four major Internet service providers by the end of this year, says British Prime Minister David Cameron on Monday.

' + google_ads[0].line3 + '

'; } else if (google_ads.length > 1) { ad_unit += ''; } } document.getElementById("ad_unit").innerHTML += ad_unit; google_adnum += google_ads.length; return; } var google_adnum = 0; google_ad_client = "pub-6743622525202572"; google_ad_output = 'js'; google_max_num_ads = '1'; google_feedback = "on"; google_ad_type = "text"; // google_adtest = "on"; google_image_size = '230x105'; google_skip = '0'; // -->

During the speech, Mr. Cameron outlined his plan to protect children from destructive Web content with automatic filter systems for devices with Internet capabilities such as computers and cellphones.

A version of Cameron's speech was leaked on Sunday, and a transcript was made available on the prime minister's website before the speech took place.?

The increasing availability of pornographic images is harmful to children, and accessing such content is ?distorting [children's] views of sex and relationships,? Cameron says. Pornography will still be available to those of age, he explains during his Monday speech. But websites with mature content will be blocked for those under the age of 18, in keeping with national laws prohibiting the underage from watching certain films, or going into sex shops.?

To filter underage content, the British government has made agreements with the state?s four major Internet providers ??TalkTalk, Virgin, Skye, and BT ??that only the account holder can change the Internet filters. By law, the account holder has to be an adult, 18 or older.

?Family friendly filters? will be applied across all public Wi-Fi networks. Mobile phone operators have agreed to put adult content filters onto phones automatically, and will require proof of age before granting access to mature content.

As part of his effort to create a safer Internet for Britons, the prime minister also put forward plans to filter search engine results to block child abuse images, pornographic portrayals of rape, and images of other illegal sexual acts.

Cameron proposed creating a blacklist of terms that would include, for example, "child abuse." Under this system, if you search ?child abuse,? the search engine would offer a list of alternatives such as: ?Do you mean child sex education?? or ?Do you mean child gender?? This is designed to prevent Internet search engines from presenting pathways into illegal images.

The blacklist would be compiled by the?Child Exploitation and Online Protection Centre. ?

?I have a very clear message for Google, Bing, Yahoo and the rest: you have a duty to act on this ??and it is a moral duty,? Cameron says. The prime minister?s goal is ?obliterating this disgusting material from the Internet.? ?

In his speech, Cameron holds the Internet search engines accountable for their search results.

?You are not separate from our society, you are part of our society, and you must play a responsible role in it,? Cameron tells Internet providers in his speech.

Cameron has said that he does not want to legislate these changes, but if the Internet companies have not made changes by October, lawmakers are ?already looking at the legislative options [that they] have to force action.?

Currently, it is illegal to posses violent pornographic material in Scotland, but a loophole in the law means that it is not illegal in England or Wales.

Internet companies are subject to laws in the country in which they operate.

However, critics of Cameron?s proposals to crack down on illegal Internet activity have labeled it ?rather 1995.?

?Banning search terms seems unlikely to combat the serious activity, which is independent of search engines,??writes?Jim Killock, the Executive Director of the Open Rights Group website, in a blog post on the organization?s website.?Many predators are witting enough to use Web browsers and service that hide their tracks, such as Tor.?Cameron?s symbolic gesture to get rid of child abuse images is valiant, but vapid, chasing hints of predatory behavior, while overlooking the larger problem of identifying real predators, Mr. Killock says.?

Cameron also announced that a curriculum for an Internet education program was being developed for both children and their parents to create a healthier understanding of how to use the Web. Telecommunication companies such as Vodafone are working to publish a new educational book: "The Digital Facts of Life."

Article > 80% of patients surviving deadly skin cancer - PharmaTimes

?

Eight out of 10 UK patients diagnosed with the most dangerous form of skin cancer - malignant melanoma - will now survive their disease, compared with five out of 10 in the early 70s.?

?

The figures, published by Cancer Research UK, show that 10-year survival has hit 80% in men and 90% in women, compared to 38% in men and 58% in women 40 years ago.?

?

This is good news for patients, particularly as 35 people a day are diagnosed with the condition.

?

The substantial leap in survival is likely to be because of the availability of better treatments, earlier diagnosis and a greater awareness of the symptoms, the charity said.

?

Nevertheless, skin cancer "is one of the fastest rising cancers in the UK, which is likely to be down to our sunbathing habits and the introduction of cheap package holidays in previous decades," noted Harpal Kumar, CR UK?s chief executive.

?

"More and more people are beating skin cancer but we can?t stop there and we need to develop better treatments for the two out of 10 where things don?t look so good," added Professor Richard Marais, director of the CR UK Paterson Institute for Cancer Research, which is based at the University of Manchester.

Halliburton 2Q profit off 8 pct; tops expectations

HOUSTON (AP) -- Halliburton's second-quarter profit dropped 8 percent, hurt by a decline in North American revenue, but it edged out Wall Street expectations and shares edged higher in premarket trading Monday.

Halliburton helps other companies produce oil and natural gas both offshore and on land. In the last several quarters, domestic oil drilling has hit levels not seen in more than two decades, but a glut of natural gas has hurt that side of the energy business.

Its stock has risen sharply this year on growth in international revenue and expectations of more drilling and better pricing and profit margins in North America.

Halliburton's growth has slowed sharply in the last four quarters, but it hopes that higher U.S. natural gas prices will help it boost revenue again.

The Houston company is also trying to put the Gulf of Mexico oil spill behind it. Halliburton provided well-cementing services for the BP PLC drilling rig that exploded in April 2010, and money set aside to cover lawsuits from the incident pushed Halliburton to a net loss in the first quarter. Halliburton has been negotiating to settle those claims.

For the quarter ended June 30, Halliburton's net income totaled $679 million, or 73 cents per share. A year ago, earnings were $737 million, or 79 cents per share.

Analysts had been expecting 72 cents per share, according to FactSet.

Overall revenue edged up 1 percent to $7.32 billion from $7.23 billion a year ago, also topping expectations despite an 8 percent revenue slide in North America. Total revenue, even with the decline in North America, was an all-time best for the second quarter.

Halliburton faces growing competition in a contentious part of its business: hydraulic fracturing or "fracking," which is the process of using chemicals and water under high pressure to crack open rock formations and release oil and natural gas. The technique has helped spur production in shale deposits but has come under fire from environmentalists, who charge that it threatens underground water supplies.

Halliburton moved to defuse some of that criticism last week by striking a deal with Nuverra Environmental Solutions Inc. to develop ways to increase the use of recycled wastewater.

And on Friday a landmark federal study showed no evidence that chemicals from the natural gas drilling process had contaminated drinking water aquifers at a western Pennsylvania drilling site. Although the study is ongoing and the results are still preliminary, it was the first independent look at whether toxic chemicals used in fracking pose a threat to people during normal drilling operations.

Shares of Halliburton Co. rose 2 cents to $45.85 before the opening bell.

Yellow Pages owner Hibu rumoured to be in debt-for-equity talks with creditors

By This Is Money Reporter

|

Yellow Pages owner Hibu is reportedly on the brink of being seized by lenders in a deal set to wipe out shareholders.

Hibu - which changed its name from Yell last year - is in talks over a complex debt-for-equity deal that will see creditors such as Wall Street hedge funds and banks take control of the phone books giant, according to The Sunday Times.

It is believed the agreement will reduce its debts from around ?2.3billion to less than ?1billion.

Trading history: Yell borrowed heavily to fund a raft of overseas acquisitions before the credit crunch struck and has also fallen foul of competition from internet search rivals

Trading history: Yell borrowed heavily to fund a raft of overseas acquisitions before the credit crunch struck and has also fallen foul of competition from internet search rivals

Once listed on the FTSE 100 Index, Hibu is now worth a fraction of its former ?5billion market value.

The group, which has 13,000 staff, borrowed heavily to fund a raft of overseas acquisitions before the credit crunch struck and has also fallen foul of competition from internet search rivals, such as Google, which has slashed earnings.

?

It is thought the debt restructuring details will be announced when it reports annual results on Thursday.

Hibu had 1.2million small firms as customers and revenues of ?1.6billion in the year to the end of March last year.

But it is struggling to sustain interest payments on its mammoth debts, said to be more than ?150million a year.

The firm has already warned that any debt restructuring deal would likely leave investors with little or no value on their shares.

Shareholders have already seen the value of the stock decimated - with shares worth just 0.3p, having plunged by 85 per cent in the past year alone.

Hibu's biggest creditors are thought to include Soros Fund Management, Deutsche Bank and US private equity firm Blackstone.

Hibu declined to comment.

?You Are Not Trayvon Martin: His death wasn?t about race, guns, or your pet issue. It was about misjudgment and overreaction?exactly what we?re doing now to the verdict,? by William Saletan. Amid the multitude of reactions to the verdict in the George Zimmerman trial, Saletan provides a fresh perspective, arguing that Martin?s death was the result of ?assumption, misperception, and overreaction.? Elsewhere in Slate, Saletan debates Gawker?s Tom Scocca on Twitter, Dahlia Lithwick examines why juror B37 was selected for the jury, and Daniel Engber explains Florida?s strange gun laws, which led to a woman woman who fired shots?but didn?t injure anyone?getting 20 years in jail.

?This Is Vengeance, Not Justice: Allowing the government to charge Bradley Manning with ?aiding the enemy? is a dangerous precedent,? by Emily Bazelon. After leaking scores of military documents to Wikileaks in 2009, Bradley Manning is pleading guilty to ten of the charges brought against him, but he says he?s not guilty of ?aiding the enemy.? On Thursday, a military judge decided not to drop this most serious charge, a move that Emily Bazelon thinks is a huge mistake. The risk, she says, is that it will set a precedent for future whistleblowers that will restrict free speech. The judge?s decision means that whenever anyone gets their hands on a damaging military document, ?publishing it is the legal equivalent of deliberately handing it to terrorists.?

?Stevie Wonder?s Florida Boycott: It?s politically savvy, morally righteous, and it could be enormously important,? by Jack Hamilton. The day after the verdict in the Zimmerman trial came down, Stevie Wonder announced that he would not perform in Florida until the state?s ?stand your ground? law is overthrown. Hamilton argues that even though Wonder is past the height of his fame and he hasn?t released an album in eight years, this is a boycott to take seriously. Wonder?s symbolic act might spark concrete ones if other artists follow his lead.

?Worrying Enormously About Small Things: How I survive anxiety and you can, too,? by Lisa T. McElroy. In this moving essay on living with anxiety, McElroy traces her life with mental illness from college to becoming a tenured law professor. Her anxiety has lessened with the security that tenure provides, and with this security McElroy has decided to speak on behalf of those living with mental illness, because, as McElroy writes, ?we cannot eliminate the terror. But we can support the people who live through it.?

?Give Me Back My iPhone! Android is a wonderful operating system. But most Android phones are crap,? by Farhad Manjoo. For his New Year?s resolution, Manjoo decided to swap his iPhone 5 for an Android phone, in large part because Android is the world?s most popular mobile operating system. He found that the phones it runs on are crap. Why? The phones come preloaded with unnecessary and unrequested features and apps, whereas Apple gives you a simpler machine that you can customize.

?Stop Saying That TV Is Better Than Movies These Days: It?s not, and that?s a lazy argument,? by David Haglund. Haglund sets out to disprove the pervasive argument that TV shows trump movies. Though television is undoubtedly getting better?as evidenced by this year?s Emmy nominations?critics? desire to crown television the new ?signature American art form? (as if there can only be one American art form) is entirely misguided. This town is big enough for the both of them.

?The Rise of the Demolisticle: 40 signs you can publish any old crap nowadays as long as it?s well-targeted,? by Will Oremus. Buzzfeed recently posted a list titled ?40 Signs You Went to Berkeley.? That?s a narrow demographic! But the post still got thousands of hits. Why? Oremus explains how, with the proclivity of social media, these types of posts (termed ?demolisticles? by Reuters? Chadwick Matlin) are great bang for the buck as they require ?little to no reporting, only a tiny bit of writing? and, let?s face it, ?minimal imagination.?

?Hookups, Again: The New York Times discovers the hookup culture,? by Katie Roiphe. The New York Times published yet another article on women and college hookup culture this week. Roiphe argues that ?it may in fact be a phenomena that doesn?t have to be explained ... or culturally deconstructed or politically analyzed.? In other words, thank you New York Times, but ?women are having casual sex? is not news. Elsewhere in Slate, Lisa Wade claims that despite affirmations of hookup culture?s universality, most of its participants are ?white, wealthy, and beautiful.?

??Cry, Baby, Cry: A journal jumps on the Dr. Sears bandwagon to say sleep training is dangerous. Science says otherwise,? by Melinda Wenner Moyer. A recent editorial in Clinical Lactation alarmed parents by claiming that sleep training can cause babies to suffer through damaging stress. Wenner Moyers sets out to disprove this claim, laying out the myriad benefits of letting your baby cry it out until they fall asleep.

??Why BMW Drivers Are Jerks to Cyclists: I have four theories,? by David Plotz. After several roadside scares, David Plotz sets out to explain why BMW drivers have it out for cyclists. Plotz presents his four-point theory on why the BMW is the car of bullies.

Policeman releases manhunt photos of accused Boston bomber

(Reuters) - A U.S. policeman said he released photographs of accused Boston marathon bomber, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, including one with a red dot of a sniper rifle's laser sight on his forehead, to counter a "fluffed and buffed" image of him on the cover of Rolling Stone magazine.

Massachusetts State Police Sgt. Sean Murphy took the photographs during the manhunt for Tsarnaev, the younger of two brothers accused of killing three people and wounding more than 260 at the Boston Marathon on April 15 by detonating two pressure-cooker bombs. The elder brother was killed in the hunt.

Murphy, a police tactical photographer, said he decided to release the images in response to the portrait of Tsarnaev on an upcoming cover of Rolling Stone, saying the picture of him with shaggy hair and a light beard glamorized "the face of terror".

"What Rolling Stone did was wrong. This guy is evil. This is the real Boston bomber. Not someone fluffed and buffed for the cover of Rolling Stone magazine," he said in a statement carried by Boston Magazine, which published more than a dozen of his pictures on its website on Thursday.

Boston Magazine said later on Thursday that Murphy had been "relieved of his duty" hours after releasing the photographs and the status of the sergeant's duty would be reviewed next week.

Massachusetts State Police declined to comment on whether Murphy had been suspended. In a statement, spokesman David Procopio said only that the release of the photographs of Tsarnaev's capture was unauthorized.

A day earlier, Boston officials reacted angrily to the portrait of Tsarnaev on the cover of Rolling Stone's August issue, over the headline: "The bomber: How a popular, promising student was failed by his family, fell into radical Islam and became a monster."

Boston Mayor Thomas Menino called the cover "a total disgrace," and the drugstore chain CVS Caremark Corp refused to sell the magazine.

Tsarnaev pleaded not guilty in court last week to all charges in a 30-count indictment. He faces the possibility of the death penalty if convicted.

PST: Gomez leaves US Gold Cup roster before QFs

This tweet from Herculez Gomez doesn?t need someone possessing the detective nous of Sherlock Holmes to work it out.

The USMNT striker is heading home.

After playing in two of the U.S. national teams three Gold Cup group games, it seems as though Herc is making way for some of Jurgen Klinsmann?s additions.

Gomez had this to say: ?8 straight? add that to the list. I know the boys will handle business. Miss you guys already.?

With the Club Tijuana forward heading back to link up with club side before their Liga MX open against Atlas on Friday, who will replace him in Klinsmann?s roster?

There are plenty of attacking options Klinsi has to call on from Major League Soccer as the knockout stages of the Gold Cup begin. Gomez? replacement should come from the original 35-man roster announced way back when.

Klinsmann has already stated there will be a few new faces for the USA in the upcoming games. I think we can bet on a few USMNT regulars getting the call up. In attack Graham Zusi?could replace Gomez and other options that Klinsmann could bring in are Houston Dynamo duo Brad Davis and Will Bruin.?Those are the most likely replacements for Gomez.

Defensively, expect to see Sporting KC?s Matt Besler pop up and maybe Omar Gonzalez? That would be my guess.

So will Klinsi gain much from calling these guys up, even though they?ve been away from the squad for the entire Gold Cup campaign so far? Um, yes.

(MORE: Graham Zusi for the Gold Cup roster anyone?)

Not only will these players who?ve elevated themselves to starters with the national team provide more quality and make the USA stronger, they also show these World Cup hopefuls that it can be done. 12 months ago guys like Zusi, Besler and Gonzalez weren?t close to being regulars for the U.S. But now their ticket to Brazil is snugly tucked into their back pocket.

Added quality and extra motivation for the wannabes, adding players to replace the likes of Gomez was a no-brainer from Klinsmann. And we will find out who the US has added to their squad by the end of day on Wednesday.

Get speculating?

American universities reeling from daily assaults by Chinese hackers

When Bill Mellon, an associate dean at the University of Wisconsin, set out to update the school's security system, he was blown away by the incredible number of cyberattacks being directed at his campus each day. "We get 90,000 to 100,000 attempts per day, from China alone, to penetrate our system," Mellon told the New York Times. "There are also a lot from Russia, and recently a lot from Vietnam, but it?s primarily China."

Mellon's case is not an isolated one. In a report published yesterday, The New York Times details how American universities are being forced to spend millions upgrading their security system to guard against a growing tide of cyberattacks. The threat is not only forcing schools to spend large amounts of money to beef up their defenses; it's also challenging the open nature of their networks, which educators say have been crucial to the sharing of ideas across campuses.

"Academics aren?t used to thinking that way."

Schools are beginning to isolate sensitive information ? research around pathogens, for example ? from the open campus network. Many are also beginning to require student and professors who travel abroad to have their computers scrubbed upon returning to school.

Foreign hackers have long targeted government and military systems in an effort to steal sensitive information about policy and weapons systems. By going after research universities, they are finding less well-guarded targets rich in intellectual property that could prove just as valuable down the road. "There are some countries, including China, where the minute you connect to a network, everything will be copied, or something will be planted on your computer in hopes that you?ll take that computer back home and connect to your home network, and then they?re in there," James A. Lewis, a senior fellow at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, told The New York Times. "Academics aren?t used to thinking that way."

It no wonder the Department of Homeland Security is not so subtly asking internet service providers to begin blocking the IP addresses of suspected hackers.

Senior US diplomat meets Egypt's interim leaders

CAIRO (AP) ? A senior U.S. diplomat held talks Monday with Egypt's interim leaders as well as the head of the military in the highest level visit by an American official since the Egyptian army ousted the country's first democratically elected leader.

The two-day visit by U.S. Deputy Secretary of State William Burns to Cairo comes nearly two weeks after Islamist President Mohammed Morsi was overthrown by the military following days of mass protests. Washington has been sharply criticized by both Morsi's supporters and opponents for what each side perceives as support for their rival's position.

Burns met with the military-backed administration led by interim President Adly Manour and Prime Minister-designate Hazem el-Beblawi, as well as army chief and Defense Minister Gen. Abdel-Fattah el-Sissi.

There was no immediate word on the discussions with the interim civilian leaders. But the military said in a statement posted on the army spokesman's Facebook page that Burns and el-Sissi discussed "the recent political developments in Egypt ... and ways to reinforce cooperation" between the two countries.

Burns, the No. 2 American diplomat, is also expected to meet with civil society groups and business leaders during his trip.

Ahead of the visit, the State Department said Burns would stress in his talks in Cairo U.S. support for the Egyptian people and an inclusive democratic process in which all political groups can participate.

A Muslim Brotherhood official said the group does not currently have a meeting scheduled with Burns.
