East L.A.'s Juan Vera jumps to avoid a sliding Ryan Dickison of Long Beach City College during the Vikings 5-2 loss.
Hits, runs and, most importantly, victories have suddenly become hard to come by for the Long Beach City College baseball team.
The Vikings lost their third game in a row Thursday, this time 5-2 to East L.A. at Joe Hicks Memorial Field. Long Beach was held to five hits by ELAC starter Juan Vera and saw its once-perfect South Coast Conference record fall to 5-3 in the process.
LBCC has scored just five runs during its losing streak. No player had more than one hit for the Vikings on Thursday, and all were singles.
"We're just not hitting right now," LBCC coach Casey Crook said. "Our swings have definitely gotten away from us."
Vera, a left-hander from John Glenn High, struck out just one hitter in eight innings but induced 11 pop flies or fly balls. In Tuesday's 2-0 loss to the Huskies, Long Beach popped out 14 times.
"We've got long, slow, loopy swings," Crook said.
Freshman left-hander Jake Angus took the loss. He allowed four runs in 6 2/3 innings and struck out five. Manuel Estevez delivered a two-run single in the first inning, and the first-place Huskies (11-9, 6-2) added two more runs in the fifth after Angus had retired the first two batters of the inning.
Robert Gonzalez had a two-out single and moved to second on a wild pitch.
Following a walk and an infield single that loaded the bases, Gonzalez scored on another wild pitch when Angus was slow to come off the mound and cover the plate.
Estevez then singled again to give ELAC a 4-1 lead."Jake's been good for us, and he's gonna be really good," said Crook, "but he has some freshman slip-ups."
Jimmy Gosano had an RBI groundout for the Vikings (10-10 overall) in the second inning and Nate Alcafaras singled in Devan Schermerhorn in the fifth.
The teams will complete their three-game series Saturday at noon at Cal State L.A.
