Google announces $250 Samsung Chromebook ? Computer Chips ...

Back in June 2011 Google decided to try and redefine what a laptop could be by launching the Chromebook. It differentiated itself by requiring a connection to the cloud to work, which was both a great and not so great idea depending on good your connection was. The other issue was the price, with a typical Chromebook costing around $350?too close to a more fully-featured laptop with a much higher spec.

Today Google is trying to rectify that stumbling block for consumers by introducing a new Chromebook with Samsung that costs just $250.

For that you get an 11.6-inch display (1366 x 768 resolution), 6.5 hours of battery life, 100GB of Google Drive Cloud Storage (for 2 years), dual band a/b/g/n WiFi, a VGA camera, HDMI port (for 1080p output), and Bluetooth 3.0. All that comes packaged in a laptop that?s just 0.8-inches thick, weighs 1.1Kg, and boots in under 10 seconds.

One detail hidden in the spec and must help account for the low price is a move away from an x86 processor. The new Samsung Chromebook relies on a Samsung Exynos dual-core chip rather than the more typical Intel offering. The amount of RAM on board hasn?t been made clear either, but at that price I doubt we?ll get more than 2GB (edit: confirmed as 2GB).

Google wants the Chromebook to be accessible to everyone while remaining fast, simple, and light. They also see Chromebooks as additional computers for around the home rather than your main machine. The lower price point is meant to open up the possibility of that happening and everyone in your home carrying one around. At $250, the potential is certainly there for that to happen.

You can pre-order the new Samsung Chromebook from 12pm PST today from a number of retailers including Amazon, Best Buy, TigerDirect, and Newegg.
